A dramatic collector's item from the mineral-rich province of Hunan – a spectacular combination of deep black sphalerite crystals and white quartz geodes. The monumental sphalerite cubes reach edge lengths of up to 2 centimeters and exhibit the characteristic metallic luster that has made Chinese sphalerite finds world-famous.

Black meets white – A geological contrast program

The surface of the specimen presents a visual spectacle: Deep black, perfectly formed sphalerite crystals sit atop a bed of transparent to milky-white quartz crystals. The orange-brown limonite accents provide warm contrasts and tell the story of this deposit's iron-rich mineralization history.

The sphalerite crystals exhibit almost perfect geometric forms – characteristic cubes and rhombohedrons with sharp edges and mirrored surfaces. The intense vitreous luster and deep black color are hallmarks of top-quality sphalerite finds from Hunan.

Weighing 273 grams and measuring a compact 7 × 5 cm, it is an impressive statement piece that unfolds its dramatic effect both on the desk and in the display case.

MINERALOGICAL FEATURES:

Sphalerite – The black gold of zinc mining

Sphalerite, also known as zinc blende, is the most important ore for zinc production worldwide. The mineral crystallizes in the cubic system and exhibits exceptional color variability – from honey-yellow to reddish-brown to deep black, depending on its iron content. The black variety from Hunan contains a high proportion of iron ions, which are responsible for both its dark color and intense metallic luster.

The perfect crystal formation is remarkable: each crystal shows sharp, undistorted edges and reflective surfaces – a sign of slow, undisturbed growth in hydrothermal veins.

Quartz as a matrix

The white quartz crystals form the matrix and enhance the visual contrast. Quartz was the first mineral to crystallize, before the iron-rich solutions deposited the sphalerite crystals. The complete formation of geodes on both sides makes the specimen interesting from all angles.

LOCATION: HUNAN PROVINCE, CHINA

Hunan Province in central China is one of Asia's most important mineral deposits. The region is geologically characterized by hydrothermal veins that run through ancient sedimentary rocks and have produced extraordinary crystals.

The Yaogangxian mine and surrounding deposits are particularly renowned worldwide for collector-quality sphalerite. The combination of perfect crystallization, dramatic color contrast, and impressive size makes Hunan sphalerite a classic in mineral collections worldwide.

The hydrothermal formation occurred millions of years ago when hot, mineral-rich solutions rose through rock fissures and crystallized in cavities. Initially, quartz formed; later – under changing chemical conditions – zinc, iron, and sulfur were deposited as sphalerite.

TECHNICAL DATA:

• Dimensions: approx. 7 × 5 × 5 cm (L × W × H)
• Weight: 273 g
• Main mineral: sphalerite / zinc blende (zinc sulfide)
• Mohs hardness: Sphalerite 3.5-4
• Color: Deep black metallic (sphalerite), white-transparent (quartz), orange-brown
• Location of discovery: Hunan Province, China
• Special feature: Large sphalerite crystals (1-2 cm), dramatic black and white contrast
• Includes: Transparent acrylic stand

PRESENTATION:

The step is presented on a transparent acrylic stand, which optimally showcases the three-dimensional structure.

Under direct light, the sphalerite crystals reveal their full brilliance: The mirrored crystal surfaces reflect the light like polished pieces of obsidian, while the quartz matrix glows softly translucently. Its compact size makes it ideal for display cases or as an eye-catching accent on a desk.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

Sphalerite, with a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4, is relatively soft and sensitive to scratches. Dust only with a dry cloth or clean with a very soft, dry cloth. Do not expose to water (sphalerite can tarnish). Protect from direct sunlight.

COLLECTIBLE VALUE & AUTHENTICITY:

We source our exhibits from carefully selected sources: mineral shows, private collections, and direct contacts at mineral sites worldwide. Every piece is checked for authenticity.

Sphalerite from Hunan Province is among the most sought-after Chinese minerals on the international collectors' market. The combination of large, perfectly formed crystals, dramatic color contrast, and the geological significance of the region makes this specimen a valuable exhibit.

Ideal for collectors of Chinese minerals, lovers of black and white contrasts, or as an impressive centerpiece in prestigious rooms. Its sculptural quality and metallic luster also make sphalerite interesting for design-oriented collectors.
