An extraordinary collector's item from the Congolese Copperbelt – a rare combination of turquoise chrysocolla and emerald-green dioptase crystals. This mineral paragenesis is among the most sought-after finds from the Katanga region and unites two of the most colorful copper minerals in a single specimen.
Turquoise meets emerald
The surface displays a fascinating interplay of colors: bright, almost aquamarine chrysocolla zones alternate with intensely turquoise areas, while small, dark emerald-green dioptase crystals sparkle like gemstones on the matrix. The black inclusions add dramatic accents and underscore the volcanic origin.
The sculptural form appears like a frozen moment of geological transformation – rough, natural surfaces meet smoothly polished areas that reveal the mineral's internal structure.
Weighing 152 grams and with compact dimensions of 7 × 5 cm, it is a perfect collector's item that looks great both on the desk and in the display case.
MINERALOGICAL FEATURES:
Rare copper mineral combination
Chrysocolla and dioptase both form in the oxidation zone of copper deposits, but rarely occur together. While chrysocolla, as a hydrous copper silicate, forms amorphous, botryoidal shapes, dioptase crystallizes in perfect, glassy rhombohedrons. This combination makes Congolese specimens mineralogical rarities.
Color genesis
Chrysocolla's intense turquoise color is caused by copper ions incorporated into its crystal structure. Dioptase displays an even richer emerald green – more intense than most emeralds. Its color palette ranges from light aquamarine to vibrant turquoise and deep emerald green.
LOCATION: KATANGA REGION, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
The Congolese Copperbelt in Katanga province is world-renowned for its exceptional copper minerals. This geological formation was created by hydrothermal processes in which hot, mineral-rich solutions rose through the rock and crystallized in fissures.
The combination of chrysocolla and dioptase is rare even within the Katanga region – most finds show either one or the other mineral, but not both together. This specimen documents a special moment in mineralization when the chemical conditions allowed both crystallizations to occur.
TECHNICAL DATA:
• Dimensions: approx. 7 × 5 × 4 cm (L × W × H)
• Weight: 152 g
• Main mineral: Chrysocolla (copper silicate)
• Associated mineral: Dioptase (copper silicate)
• Mohs hardness: Chrysocolla 2.5-3.5 | Dioptase 5 (soft to medium-hard, sensitive)
• Color: Turquoise blue, light blue (chrysocolla), emerald green (dioptase)
• Location found: Katanga region, Democratic Republic of Congo
• Special feature: Rare chrysocolla-dioptase combination, sculptural form
• Includes: Transparent acrylic stand
PRESENTATION:
The mineral is presented on a transparent acrylic stand, which makes the sculptural form visible from all sides.
Under direct light, the dioptase crystals display their characteristic glassy luster, while the chrysocolla zones shimmer in various shades of blue. Its compact size makes it ideal for a display case or desk.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
Chrysocolla and dioptase are relatively soft and delicate. Protect from direct sunlight (color may fade over time). Dust only with a dry cloth or clean with a slightly damp, soft cloth. Do not immerse in water or treat with harsh cleaning agents.
COLLECTIBLE VALUE & AUTHENTICITY:
We source our exhibits from carefully selected sources: mineral shows, private collections, and direct contacts at mineral sites worldwide. Every piece is checked for authenticity.
The combination of chrysocolla and dioptase is a rarity even in the mineral-rich Katanga region. Most collections contain either chrysocolla or dioptase – finding both together on one specimen is exceptional. Ideal for collectors of Congolese minerals, lovers of turquoise copper minerals, or as a unique statement piece in a prestigious setting.
