Azurite & Malachite – Tsumeb Mine, Namibia

A spectacular mineral specimen from the world-famous Tsumeb Mine in Namibia. This combination unites deep blue to blackish-blue azurite with emerald-green malachite – a classic example of copper mineralization at its finest.

The blue gold of Tsumeb: Azurite

The specimen displays azurite in two characteristic forms: In the center, dark blue, almost black azurite crystals with an intense vitreous luster dominate, while in the lower area, bright light blue, massive azurite aggregates form the base.

The green malachite surrounds the azurite crystals like an organic coating. The typical fibrous to grape-like structure is clearly visible.

The Tsumeb Mine: Mineralogical Legend

The Tsumeb Mine in the Oshikoto region of Namibia is considered one of the world's richest mineral deposits. Over 240 different mineral species have been identified here – including unique copper, lead, and zinc minerals found nowhere else in the world.

The mine operated from 1905 to 1996, supplying collectors with spectacular specimens of azurite, malachite, dioptase, wulfenite, and many other minerals. Tsumeb minerals are now represented in museums and private collections worldwide and are considered a benchmark for quality and aesthetics.

Visual impact

The color combination of dark blue, light blue, and emerald green makes this specimen a visual highlight. Under light, the different minerals reveal their characteristic luster effects: azurite displays a vitreous luster, malachite a silky luster.

The three-dimensional cavity structure in the center provides insight into crystal formation and makes the geological processes comprehensible – a miniature landscape made of copper minerals.
